This project involved the modernisation and enlargement of a 1960s townhouse in Swiss Cottage, London. The brief called for a single-storey rear kitchen extension, the addition of an extra bedroom, and a full reconfiguration of the layout to simplify and enhance the flow of the home.
The existing property was transformed into a bright, spacious family home with a focus on natural light and clean, contemporary design. The new open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area was created by extending the rear of the house, with the floor level lowered by two steps to achieve a generous floor-to-ceiling height. Large picture windows, glazed doors, and a strategically placed kitchen skylight flood the space with natural light, creating a dynamic and inviting atmosphere throughout the day.
Internally, the layout was reimagined to improve functionality and storage. A 5-bedroom, 2-bathroom house became a 6-bedroom, 3-bathroom home, with the utility room, en-suite, and master bathroom stacked efficiently in the centre of the house. The existing staircase was replaced to maximise light and space in the hallways, while built-in storage was integrated throughout—beneath the stairs, in the cloakroom, bedrooms, and formal living room—to make the most of every corner.
The garden was designed as a seamless extension of the internal space, with a natural flow from inside to outside that enhances the sense of usable space. The result is a modern, family-friendly home that balances contemporary design with practical living.
