We were invited to produce concept designs as part of a competition to convert an existing office warehouse into a modern luxury penthouse. The proposal beat off three other architects to win the competition to proceed with the design.
Our proposals aim to create a grand entrance into the penthouse (via the existing stair and lift access) The apartment is accessed via a front garden, the user enters into a full height grand entrance lobby from which all areas of the apartment can be accessed. The spatial concept of the scheme aims to create a definitive separation between the social spaces – the living room, kitchen, dining areas and the quieter, more intimate sleeping areas.
The main social space is the heart of the scheme where the living kitchen and dining space is all open plan dan carefully defined through the use of materials, a slight change in levels and strategically placed furniture. This social space is full height taking advantage of the loft style character and is flooded with light through the main front window overlooking the park and a series of roof lights positioned over key areas of the room.
A mezzanine level provides an extra bedroom, study space and external terrace allowing for a little escape in within the roofscape.
Key to the proposal was an introduction of as much amenity space as possible, this was achieved through the use of a terrace and a balcony within the main social space and smaller balconies cut out of the roof for the bedrooms.
The client noted that the clarity of the design and the carefully planned layout as the reason for selecting us.
