This Victorian terrace is reconfigured and extended to provide light and versatile spaces for our client who works from home and loves to entertain family and friends.
The Victorian features and character of the original ‘front room’ are retained. In contrast the split level central / rear areas are open and contemporary in style and provide a variety of spaces conducive to informal socialising. The internal space is cleared of structure which has been relocated to the perimeter and integrated seamlessly into the existing building fabric. Excavation to the rear maximises ceiling heights and locates the kitchen and dining areas at garden patio level. The extension can be generously opened up to the garden and includes a window seat that’s accessed from both inside and outside.
To the exterior a timber element made of charred larch is seen to be inserted within the recycled brickwork cladding. Visually the textural black timber forms a protective shell around the pale smooth oak joinery to the interior. The dark finishes of the timber and external paving provide a backdrop to set off the colour of the green foliage and seasonal flora [planting to be developed over time].
Teddy the dog loves the new extension as he has a dedicated sleeping area under the window seat from which he can also directly access the garden via his own dog flap.
