The conversion and extension of a Hackney warehouse into flats retaining the ground floor commercial units. Working with Weston Williamson Architects, we set out to compose a series of spaces and palette of materials that both complemented and stood aside the existing masonry structure. Forming a new stair enabled space to be created for a larger first floor flat and uninterrupted access to the second floor flat allowed for the efficient layout to flow. We opted for pre-weathered zinc as external cladding material which wrapped up and around the front facade of the warehouse crowning it and knitting it back to the original building through a carefully considered placement of the windows. The project is in a prominent location adjacent to Broadway Market, a busy shopping street. The project incorporates photovoltaics and an air source heat pump.
