A rooftop extension and first floor remodelling of a hotel in Bermondsey, London. Careful consideration was given as to how to transform this already buzzy and successful hotel into a destination and event hub. To create a true panorama of a great city is an opportunity rarely afforded to anyone. At 30 metres up from street level we looked to crown the existing larch-clad hotel with a function space that transformed it into not simply a place to stay and eat, but a destination in its own right. Arranged so as to free up space on the first floor for thirteen more hotel rooms, the proposal allowed the hotel to remain operational by utilising the existing structural grid and capacity of the columns and core. The proposal focuses on a simple prefabricated steel trussed frame and glazing to maximise views across London. It was important to us to understand not only the planning context and construction logistics for the proposals but also the spirit of Bermondsey. With an imposing presence at the end of Bermondsey Street, the hotel along with our rooftop proposal seeks to add to the already unique and incidental roofscape.
